Culture Cafe at Hoogah
When I’m not working in my office job, I have the pleasure of working in Hoogah on Bryn y Mor Road, Swansea.
A little gem that lives up to its Danish-inspired name hygge, meaning encompassing a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life.
Every month Hoogah adds two items to their menu, every time those items are purchased the money is put towards the charity who curated them. This month the charity is EYST, Ethnic Minority & Youth Support Team Wales.
Back in 2005 EYST was set up by a group of young ethnic minority people in Swansea. They aimed to fill a gap in provision for young BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) people aged 11-25 by providing a targeted, culturally sensitive and holistic support service to meet their needs. EYST provides a safe place for young people to gain support and advice on issues such as employment, homework support and helping girls who are faced with forced marriage. Their amazing team also provides essential support for asylum seekers and refugees from all over the world!
Thanks to funding, EYST now employs a team of 35 staff, based across Wales in Swansea, Cardiff, Newport and Wrexham. They also have an active and growing volunteer team of over 100 volunteers.

Hoogah opened its doors on Monday the 30th of September to the members of EYST. Together we learnt how to write our names in Persian and Mandarin, witnessed a Nigerian headdress being assembled and also had henna applied to our hands. It was so lovely speaking with those who attended and learning about different cultures and just having a chat with new people.
It’s so important to remove walls and negative stereotypes to allow growth as a community. Everyone who attended had smiles on their faces and we left with more knowledge and understanding than we came in with.
If you’re in the area, pop into Hoogah for a delightfully cheesy sourdough pizza, or a toffee nut chocolate milkshake, or you could treat yourself and have both to show your support for this wonderful charity as well as your local businesses!
