What is Surrounded?
You may be wondering what this space is. Why posts are being dangled in front of you from us here at Surrounded. Well, here are some answers.
Surrounded is an online third space. A third space is the social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace. Examples of third places in the real world would be environments such as cafes, clubs, public libraries, and parks.
Third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement and establishing a sense of place.

The idea behind Surrounded came from those I was surrounded by. See what I did there? I tend to find myself around people who are either doing awesome things or have fresh and interesting perspectives, from running their own business to creating art, studying to make an impactful change or just sharing an idea they believe in.
Surrounded utilises social media as a spotlight for those people. Supporting individuality and sharing pockets of positivity can make a difference and encourages people to continue doing what they love and are passionate about. Surrounded is basically the equivalent of a virtual hug.
From first-hand experience, I can relate to the difficulties when finding your voice, sharing ideas and notions that you believe in can be a difficult and daunting task, especially when the subjects in question are important to you and resonate deep within you. The possibility that someone somewhere might take what is being shared negatively, or not agree with the message shouldn’t be seen as a deterrent. It is these push backs that allow conversations to take place, and without these conversations, we are left ignorant, going along with blinkers on in a world full of possibilities and amazing points of view that should be shared and explored. If we don’t expand our peripheral view we can become stagnant and miss out on inspiration and triggers that allow us to grow and expand on what we already know.
In short, Surrounded is about creating a community. A melting pot for those who share an interest or idea, finding comfort in reality and gaining inspiration from each other to grow together. It offers a space in which to learn new things and be exposed to different perspectives.
